From 2019-2020, I will be teaching a new MA level course on historical sociolinguistics.

To launch the course, we will welcome two guest speakers:

• Prof. Dr. Peter Trudgill, who will teach a guest lecture on the role of the Flemish refugees in the formation of East Anglian dialects. He is also one of the founding fathers of the field of sociolinguistics, holds honorary doctorates from various universities across the globe, and is currently an emeritus professor of English linguistics at the Université de Fribourg and an honorary professor of sociolinguistics at the University of East Anglia (UEA). He has published widely on many different issues in historical and contemporary sociolinguistics, including dialectology and new-dialect formation, language contact and sociolinguistic typology, and the history of non-standard varieties of English.
• Dr. Gijsbert Rutten, who will teach a guest lecture on his Letters as loot project, offering us a sociolinguistic approach to 17th and 18th-century Dutch. He is currently the Director of Education and an assistant professor of Dutch historical sociolinguistics at the Leiden University of Centre of Linguistics, where he spearheaded several high-impact projects in historical sociolinguistics.
